Seasonal Hubs are Fun
68Seasons in the Sun
The perfect hub would attract lots of visitors every day of the year, but some topics are just not like that. A seasonal hub is one that is tied to a particular time of year. It will lie dormant for eleven months, gathering virtual moss, only to waken up all by itself when its time comes around again. Seasonal hubs are fun. Most hubs, most of mine at least, are statistically boring. They just sit there, day after day, attracting their normal number of views, be it one, ten or a hundred, give or take minor fluctuations. But the seasonal ones look far prettier on the stats page:
This one, The Holy Month of Ramadan - an introduction for non-Muslims, is typical. Nothing all year, then a quick, sharp climb to a peak, then down the other side for a well earned slumber. Will this year's peak exceed last year's? Who knows. It's simply fun to watch what happens. Will this mildly (OK blatantly) promotional meta-hub increase its chances of passing last year's peak? Quite possibly. Is that cheating? Yes but it's my bat and my ball...
The extremely sharp eyed among you might have spotted that the peaks are slightly less than a year apart. That's because the Islamic year is twelve lunar months, or 355 days. Ramadan advances by ten days per solar year. Your Christmas hubs will stay firmly centered on December twenty-fifth!
It is worth noting that seasonal hubs needn't just be about festivals and holidays. Annual events like the opening of the football season, or the BBC Promenade Concerts, or the Edinburgh Festival will perform the same way. But these ones take a little more maintenance. You'll need to dust them down in time for the main event, updating such specific information as dates, venues, etc. It's still easier than writing a new hub and well worth the effort. A little bit of fresh information near the top shows readers that the material is up to date.
I'm not here for the money...
though that might change when I stop the day job. My main reason for writing here is to attract readers who enjoy my output. Tucked away in the Hub Metrics tab is my favourite performance indicator of all: View Duration. Revenue Potential doesn't interest me at all. But in this high speed on-line World, isn't it humbling to know that people are willing to set aside enough time in their day to read an article from beginning to end? Whether they comment or not, the readers who contribute to a four or five star View Duration rating are my reason for carrying on writing.
And finally - any fifty-plus year-old telecommunications engineers out there might have noticed the similarity between the seasonal views graph (above) and the waveform of the rectified squegging oscillator of a super-regenerative wireless receiver operating in linear mode. Sad old codgers, aren't we?
Thanks for reading!

Cool hub. Great idea since your hub won't be seasonal ha ha.
Delightful as always, Paraglider. I am a great fan of the seasonal hub and have written a few. They never fail to perform and your tips are right on. Also, like you I get a real rush out of people who actually spend time reading my stuff both on hubpages and in my blogs, although I must say I like money too-- but it is not my primary emotional drive here--probably because I don't make enough of it to make a real difference in my lifestyle LOL
Inside every writer there is a shameless exhibitionist I guess--well at least there is inside this writer :-)
Paraglider, what a fun hub to read. Much ado about traffic and hubs. Not here one year yet but it will be interesting to see what happens in the years to come. Your last couple of sentences made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever...lol
Not sure how many, if any of your hubs I have read before, but I feel I have been missing out. Classy, entertaining, interesting, oh and a funky picture of a hub thing as well.
Great band title.
Cardisa and anyone else who hasn't been here a year yet: never, ever unpublish a seasonal hub in its "off season" and then re-publish as the holiday or anniversary of the event approaches again! Doing so will cause you to lose the "aging" it has built up since the original pub date. Yes, its numbers will be down for 10-11 months of the year, but that's not a bad thing thanks to the advantages of the aging thing. Or...it could turn out to be like my "How Not to Cook Christmas Dinner" hub and still be a strong hit-getter in July. Go figure.
Great hub, Paraglider!
You did an excellent job showing how seasonal hubs worked as opposed to just telling people! Awesome work!
Nice Hub...I had put a forum thread similar to this out there a while ago after watching my seasonal food Hubs behave this way. Seasonal, not meaning tied to holidays or events, but reflecting what people seem to eat at certain times of the year. Tomatoes, corn, and beans are pretty hot right now! :)
My dad would understand what you said about rectified squegging oscillators, but I do not - well I do understand some of the words, but ye gods! Lovely hub- a little shameless self-promotion never hurt any one.
I enjoyed this and read it beginning to end. Thanks for the entertaining view. I like your humor.
Your an awesome writer I don't care what anyone says, I just ran into your hubs and literally I'm blown away by the power of your style of writing, you have the ability to peal open the hidden reality to things in such a way that the things that weren't so obvious to the average viewer is made instantly obvious to them.
This is what your writing has done to me here, with this very well written informative perspective on seasonal hubs & the graphical analytic's to it all. Voted up as interesting & useful. You also earned yet another follower (:
